After an extended rest with a great friend in Boulder, it was time to meet up with the Encompass film crew and attempt to capture our trip in a few short days for the world to see! Hesitant about only getting a short amount of time with a camera, we wanted to represent our ride as best we could in that period so we chose an incredible climbing location outside of Boulder by the name of Cathedral Spires. We chose a moderate 3 pitch route that could be filmed from the climb itself which would bring into perspective the grand scale of the route. Unaware to us prior to a few days before, our friend and product manager, Robin Sansom would also fly out to meet us for the duration of the filming. Robin is a prominent force behind the "Ranger Program" and the reason behind either Kurt or I riding the Great Divide in the first place. It would be an honor to have him along for a few days.
Camping only a few miles from the climb the night before made for easy access to the trail-head the next morning. Taunted by storm clouds throughout the day, we managed the long, steep approach and managed to get the route finished just in time. Lighting and thunder has been a very common theme for us while climbing and on almost every ascent we have landed in some of the worst spots possible to be caught in during an electric storm! Having never been filmed climbing it is going to be awesome to see how the final film comes together. It is also worth mentioning how fun it was to work with and be a part of the project being made by Dominic and Nadia of Encompass films.
