Beautiful Bandon caught us in her siren song: Super nice people, everywhere we went folks were eager to help us find our way, from the coffee shop to the post office to the creamery and finally to the scenic drive along the coast. (If you know Bandon, we took the most circuitous route possible.)The next day I couldn't resist the beach any longer and had to stop to dip my toes in the water. I pried off my shoes and ran toward the water. Then stopped midway because the sand was HOT! I decided to keep going and cool my toes in the water. Ended up with tiny blisters on my toes from the burning hot sand, but getting in the salt water was so worth it.
We continued on south through Winchester and over the bridge into Coos Bay. When we rolled into the Sunset Beach campground, the fog had settled into the swimming cove. I was exhausted thanks to my first (hopefully only) bout of food poisoning at lunch. The next morning, the clouds had parted (literally), birds were singing, and the sun was shining.
We rode back past the beach, now completely clear of fog. Two small deer came out to say hello - an idyllic start to the day. And then we started coming across street names featuring words like "devil" and "hell" and we had to earn our way through the mountainous scenery. We pedaled on towards home for the night, Harris Beach State Park. This was a favorite campsite, featuring not just beach access, but also laundry facilities (!) and an ice cream truck that makes a nightly visit. We encountered our first hiker-biker campers who had stayed at a campsite multiple nights, too pleased with the surroundings to leave.
We resisted; California was calling our names.

- What was the genesis moment or inspiration for your upcoming adventure? Have you traveled by bike in the past? Reading Bruce Weber’s New York Times posts about his 2011 cross-country bicycle trip rekindled my 20-year old dream of doing a long bike ride. Then I talked with several friends who have done long tours – both the PCH and Transamerica…and I started thinking, hey, if these guys can do this, I can too. I’ve done the Seattle-to-Portland Bicycle Classic a couple times – what’s a few more hundred miles?

- What is your goal for the route? What do you hope to get out of this journey? I intend to ride from Port Angeles, WA to the US-Mexico border. I am hoping for adventure, time on the beautiful Pacific coast, a good tail wind and embracing life outside the cubicle! I’m looking forward to visiting the small towns along the coast and especially meeting new people along the way.
